Kansas City NWSL Announces a Trio of New Players Ahead of the Holiday Season

KANSAS CITY (Dec. 23, 2020) – Kansas City NWSL continues to build its roster for the team’s inaugural 2021 season. The team announced the signings of a pair of Kansas City-area natives to one-year contracts: defender Sydney Miramontez from Lenexa, Kan. and forward Jaycie Johnson from Lee’s Summit, Mo. Additionally, goalkeeper Carly Nelson was officially added to the KC NWSL roster, signing a two-year contract.

Both Miramontez and Johnson played for the same club team throughout their youth careers before joining the University of Nebraska women’s soccer team together. Both players made 70+ appearances for the Cornhuskers, and Johnson added 42 goals from her forward position.

“I have known Jaycie and Syd for many years and I look forward to working with them again,” said Head Coach Huw Williams. “Adding quality players from Kansas City is always a plus!”

Miramontez first joined the NWSL in 2017 and started all five games she appeared in for FC Kansas City. She followed the team to Utah where she made 14 appearances over two seasons before retiring in February of this year.

Johnson was a third-round draft pick in 2017 for the North Carolina Courage; she unfortunately sat out the entire season with an injury. The following year she joined Reign FC where she remained through the 2019 season.

Nelson is a former Utah Ute standout, selected as a United Soccer Coaches All-Pacific Region goalkeeper where she led the Pac-12 conference with 10 shutouts and 101 saves. She captured 23 shutouts in her career as a Ute, ranking her third in the university’s history.

“Carly has many qualities we look for in a young goalkeeper and she will provide depth and competition in that position,” said Williams.
