Kansas City NWSL Hosts Racing Louisville in Midweek Matchup

KANSAS CITY (Aug. 24, 2021) - Kansas City NWSL returns home to Legends Field on Wednesday, Aug. 25 to face Racing Louisville for the third time this season. The teams last played on Aug. 8 in Louisville, with the home side claiming the 3-1 win. Prior to that, they battled to a 0-0 draw on May 15th, the opening match of the regular season for the two expansion teams.

Kansas City enters the match following a 4-0 loss to the North Carolina Courage on the road in Cary, North Carolina. Although it was a tough loss, Kansas City led in multiple statistical categories over North Carolina, outshooting the Courage 26-9 and held 54 percent of the possession time, but the team was unable to find the back of the net.

Head Coach Huw Williams thought his team was the better of the two at times and explained after the game that they need to handle those moments, in the attack and defensively, better than how they performed during the match.

Racing Louisville is 4-6-4 and sits ninth on the table with 16 points. Louisville’s most recent NWSL match resulted in a 1-1 draw versus Chicago on August 18th.

BATTLE OF THE INAUGURAL TEAMS
Louisville and Kansas City are the two new expansion clubs added into the NWSL for this 2021 season. Louisville announced on October 22, 2019, that the club would be sharing the ownership group with Louisville City FC at Lynn Family Stadium.

Nearly a year later, Kansas City announced the new expansion team on December 7, 2020, when Chris and Angie Long, along with Brittany Matthews, announced they were bringing women’s soccer back to Kansas City to play at Legends Field.

Both teams have made big acquisitions this season in attempts to bolster their rosters. Louisville signed Nadia Nadim in June and she has already added two goals in only four games with the team. Just last week, Kansas City acquired Adrianna Franch in a trade with the Portland Thorns. Franch is expected to make her Kansas City debut in Wednesday’s game.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Kansas City: Goalkeeper Adrianna Franch -
Kansas City’s newly acquired goalkeeper is coming off her recent action for the United States in the Olympics, as she made two appearances in the Games. She played in the semi-final and third-place medal matches and helped the United States win a bronze medal when they defeated Australia 4-3.

Franch played, and started, in seven matches for Portland this year, making 16 saves and had four clean sheets. Portland won four of the seven games she played in while only allowing six total goals. Look for Franch to bring her leadership and high caliber skillset to the Kansas City goal right off the bat, especially in front of the home crowd.

Racing Louisville: Midfielder Savannah McCaskill: Last time out, McCaskill was troublesome for the Kansas City backline, using her speed and dynamic skills to tally two assists in the 3-1 win for Louisville. She has started in all 14 games while logging a total of 1,228 minutes, one goal and three assists on the year.

McCaskill’s two assists in the last game came from crosses into the box. Kansas City’s outside defenders will need to pressure the talented midfielder to try and neutralize her outside options.

HOW TO FOLLOW ALONG
Fans have a couple of ways to follow along with Wednesday’s match, which begins at 7 p.m. CT. Locally, Aly Trost and Dave Borchardt will bring all the action on Sports Radio 810 WHB. Nationally, the match will be broadcast live on Paramount+.
